Rec commission approves renaming arena after pioneer

It's still pending RDKB approval, but the Grand Forks Arena is to be named Jack Goddard Memorial Arena.

The Grand Forks and district recreation commission has unanimously approved the re-naming of the Grand Forks Arena to the Jack Goddard Memorial Arena.Jack Goddard was mayor of Grand Forks for eight years and alderman for six years. He was integral to the completion of several important local projects including the relocation of the airport to its present site, the construction of the Boundary Mall, the building of the arena and the start of Babe Ruth baseball.Jack’s son, Jack Goddard Jr., made the presentation to the recreation commission on Thursday morning.The proposal still needs to be approved by the RDKB board.Jack Goddard passed away on Sept. 12 at the age 93.During his proposal to the commission, Jack Jr. described his father as being an avid sportsman whose passion for sports like baseball and curling was considerable.He told the commission: “Jack’s proudest moment was the construction and completion of the Grand Forks Arena, and the continued success of so many recreational activities the arena gave the people of the community of Grand Forks up until the end of his life.”
