Trail RCMP reported an act of racist graffiti at the Ecole Des Sept-Sommets elementary school in Rossland on Friday, Oct. 20.

Trail and Greater District RCMP officers received a report that an unknown suspect(s) had vandalised the French immersion school’s property.

“School officials discovered that someone had spray painted graphic pictures and a racist word on the outside wall of the gymnasium,” said RCMP Cpl. James Grandy in a release.

Rossland Mayor Andy Morel expressed his concern with the act, saying it in no way represents the spirit of racial equity and understanding in the Golden City.

“It’s extremely disheartening to see that going on at our schools and our community,” said Morel. “I hope the perpetrators are found out. It’s a heinous act especially targeting an elementary school.”

Traces of the alleged graffiti could not be seen just days after the incident, so it looked as though it was dealt with swiftly, said Morel.

The Trail Times sent inquiries to the Ecole Des Sept-Sommets’ principal who referred the Times to the Francophone School Board of British Columbia (CSF).

In a statement, CSF General Director Pascale Bernier said they are dismayed at the discovery of racist graffiti at the Sept-Sommets school in Rossland.

“The School Board strongly condemns such acts of hatred and discrimination and reserves the right to take legal action against those responsible for this unacceptable act,” said Bernier.

“At the same time, the CSF wishes to thank and congratulate the school director who, through her actions, her dedication and her decision-making skills, has done everything possible to ensure that none of the school’s students are confronted with the vision of a such a reality, and that staff members are supported in such a situation.”

The heinous act comes just months after the B.C. Ministry of Education launched its K-12 Anti-racism Action Plan. All school districts and independent schools are required to have codes of conduct and policies to address racism and discrimination. In addition, students and families have access to more anti-racism resources.

“The School Board is one of the few school boards in the province to have created a leadership position in equity and anti-racism. This position was added to that of director of Reconciliation and Indigenous Education,” added Bernier. “He will continue all his efforts to make our society even more welcoming and respectful of the diversity which is its richness.”

The police are asking the public for any information on this crime or the identity of the suspect(s). Call the Trail Detachment at 250-364-2566 to speak to an investigator.
