POLICE REPORT: People driving in Grand Forks area should beware of black ice

Black ice is responsible for two accidents in the Grand Forks area. One on Highway 3 and another in the 1200 block of North Fork Road.

Prohibited driving

On Feb. 14 at 9:03 p.m., Grand Forks RCMP checked a vehicle on 68th Avenue and Spraggett Road and determined the driver was prohibited from driving a motor vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle will appear in court at a later date, but the vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.

Domestic incident

A report was received from a resident in Christina Lake of a possible domestic case on Feb. 15.

When police attended, it was determined that no fault had taken place.

“A male was located in the residence, but had conditions to have no contact with the female,” stated Grand Forks RCMP Cpl. Richard Lanz. “The male was arrested and is being charged with breach of a probation order.”

Black ice leads to accidents

A single-vehicle collision was reported on Highway 3, east of Grand Forks by Collins Road on Feb. 16 at 10:50 p.m.

The driver of the vehicle had some cuts and scrapes but no serious injuries.

“It turned out that the driver hit a slippery patch on the road and started spinning until it went into the right hand ditch where the vehicle overturned,” said Lanz.

According to Lanz, it was confirmed that the roads were extremely slippery, and that this was the second incident that occurred in that area that day.

On Feb. 19, a single-vehicle collision off the 1200 block on North Fork Road was also a result of black ice.

At 7:35 p.m., a grey Ford Escape lost traction on black ice and travelled off the road and over an embankment before it struck some trees.

The airbag was reportedly deployed, but the driver did not appear to have any serious injuries.

“The passenger did complain about some back pain,” said Lanz. “But they were both wearing seat belts.”
