POLICE REPORT: Be wary when making citizen's arrest

March 1 At 6:28 in the morning, police received a complaint of mailboxes being pushed over on 65th Avenue. Staff Sergeant Jim Harrison says a resident saw a neighbour’s boy pushing another’s mailbox over and apprehended him. The matter is still under investigation.

Harrison says the matter became more complicated when the person took it into his or her own hands.

He adds that if you do see something you can call 911, if it’s in progress.

“Keep the person in sight until we get there and point the person out to us and we’ll take care of the matter,” he says, adding that taking it into your own hands can lead to legal complications, such as assault and forcible confinement.

“Citizens can make a citizen’s arrest when they find somebody committing an offence in relation to property that they own or control,” Harrison says. “They’re not entitled to make a citizen’s arrest in regard to anything else.”

He says the best thing to do is observe, record and report it right away.

March 2 At 9:55 p.m. a vehicle rolled over due to icy conditions on Spencer Hill. The female driver, 47, and the two female passengers, 63 and 38, all from Grand Forks, suffered injuries including glass cuts and a broken ankle.

All three were taken to hospital for treatment and subsequently released.

March 4 At 6 a.m. police got a report that somebody had fired paintballs at the front window of a residence on Boundary Drive. Harrison says there was no damage other than the mess the five orange paintballs made. Police have no witnesses or suspects.

And in a related note, sometime between 11 p.m. on March 4 and 5 p.m. March 5, paintballs were shot at a home on 12th Street.

Harrison asks residents to be on the lookout and report any suspicious paintball activity.

At 2:30 p.m. a shed was broken into and two sets of tires and one set of rims worth approximately $1,200 were stolen. There were no signs of forced entry so police suspect either a key was used or the shed was not properly locked.

There are currently no suspects or witnesses.

RCMP are also investigating two dogs that were found dead up in the Gilpin forest service road over the weekend. But, as the investigation has just begun, little information is available for release at this time.
