Nomination deadline Feb. 16 for Outstanding Women of the Boundary Awards

The Boundary Women’s Coalition will once again provide a chance to honour the women in our lives who have made a difference.

National Women’s Day was first observed in the United States in 1909 but it was not until 1977 that the United Nations’ (UN) General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on member states to proclaim a day for women’s rights and international peace.

Following the UN’s lead, Canada chose March 8 as International Women’s Day.

This day is set aside to recognize the economic, political and social achievements of women. It is a day to celebrate the successes of women while remaining cognizant of inequities still to be addressed.

International Women’s Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to fully participate in society.

Globally, events are held to inspire women and celebrate achievements. This year, the Boundary Women’s Coalition will once again provide an opportunity for members of the Boundary communities to honour the women in their lives who have made a significant difference.

Anyone can make a nomination to celebrate a Boundary-area woman who has played a meaningful role within her community.

A nomination package can be requested by emailing bwrc@telus.net, phoning 250-442-5212 or heading in person to The Boundary Women’s Resource Centre at 268 Market Ave., in Grand Forks.

The nomination package, which details categories and the process, must be returned to the centre by Thursday, Feb. 16.

This year, the Outstanding Women of the Boundary Awards celebration will take place on Thursday, March 8 at the Midway Community Hall from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Refreshments will be served during the awards presentation.
