Grand Forks RCMP on the graffiti trail

Grand Forks RCMP executed a search warrant hoping to find a grow op, but instead found a lead on another incident, involving graffiti.

Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison said that they are investigating a string of incidents where buildings were spray-painted. The graffiti usually depicted a logo with a star, crossed rifles and the word “Dissent,” usually painted in green.

The search took place on Monday.

“We found a small amount of marijuana and evidence of a grow op, but unfortunately it had been harvested before we got in,” Harrison said.

He said that though they didn’t get what they came for, they did pick up the lead.

The graffiti has been found on buildings over the winter, mostly in the downtown core of Grand Forks.

The RCMP is asking that any business owners who have had the stenciled graffiti painted on their buildings to contact them and report the incident, whether it is still visible or has been painted over. They would to find out details like when it occurred and cost of repairs. This will also help in determining the impact that such acts are having on the community.

“We’re wanting all the businesses who paid over that graffiti to give us a call and we will continue the investigation and hopefully lay some charges,” Harrison said.

To report if you’ve been a victim of graffiti, call the Grand Forks RCMP at 250-442-8288.

Police are looking for any tips on the person responsible for the graffiti. To leave an anonymous tip call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. The police file number is 2011-1864.
