Marjean Fichtenberg was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal for her work done in establishing rights for victims of violent crime.

She was presented the medal by Mayor Brian Taylor, by authority of the queen, at the Grand Forks city council meeting on Monday. She was nominated by Joe Wamback of the Canadian Crime Victims Foundation in Toronto, Ont.

“I don’t feel this medal is all mine because I have so much support from so many wonderful people, including my family, my daughter and my grandson, all the courageous people and brave people who have shared their stories and allowed me to take their stories to the government so that I could try and make a difference for victims of violent crime,” Fichtenberg said, after receiving the medal.
