Fugitive bank robber caught at Christina Lake

Dennis Paul Haines, a convicted bank robber from Alberta, was arrested at Christina Lake early Sunday morning.

A convicted bank robber from Alberta was arrested at Christina Lake last Sunday.

Grand Forks RCMP received a report of an intoxicated male passed out along Highway 3 at 3:30 a.m. near Christina Lake.

At 3:45 a.m. it was confirmed that the male was 38-year-old Dennis Paul Haines and he was arrested without incident.

He is currently in the process of being handed over to Alberta RCMP and is headed to Kelowna.

“From Kelowna, Haines will be transported to the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre pending his escort back to Alberta, based on the warrant for apprehension from Corrections Canada,” Grand Forks RCMP’s Staff Sgt. Harrison said.

Jasper RCMP has now charged Haines with Escape of Lawful Custody.

According to an RCMP release, Haines was incarcerated at the correctional institute at Grande Cache, Alta. and was supposed to be at a prison work camp close to Jasper, Alta. between Sept. 26 and 30. He fled from the camp between 11 p.m. on Sept. 26 and 6 a.m. on Sept. 27.

Haines was serving a 10-year sentence for a number of robberies.
