School District 51 is continuing to work on the new fibre optic network.

Superintendent Michael Strukoff says internally they are working on the network, particularly on the phone systems, and are making progress.

He says the district is in discussions with the Provincial Learning Network as to how they’re going to shift from the service they provide to the community network.

“That part has us breaking new ground in terms of government policy around shared services,” Strukoff says. “It was originally designed to be for public schools only and we’re trying to bring onboard the City of Grand Forks.”

The school district and the city’s buildings will use the network.

“At this point in time, we’re optimistic that we’re going to break some new ground in terms of shared services it’s just taking a little longer,” he says.

The high-speed fibre optic network is a joint venture between the city and School District 51.

Strukoff says that they hope to have the network running, and have a revenue stream identified, by September.
