Election sign vandalism a federal offence

During this election campaign, there have been reports of sign vandalism, which is a federal offence.

Liberal candidate Shan Lavell said that in Grand Forks, eight of her signs have gone missing.

Lavell said that four signs near the Ramada Hotel disappeared, as well as one near Twisted Tomato and some near the outskirts of town.

“I just want the constituents to know that we’ve been there with signs and that someone took them down and that happens; people have feelings about politics,” Lavell said.

“You can’t help but feel like a target when it’s your group (of signs) that have entirely disappeared.”

Signs advertising Alex Atamanenko, the current MP of the B.C. Southern Interior and a member of the NDP, have mostly been left alone in the area. Atamanenko’s office reported two signs that were mangled but left nearby and one that had been taken.

Meanwhile Conservative candidate Stephen Hill sent out a press release detailing some signs that were vandalized. Grand Forks RCMP said that they had not received any official reports of vandalism to the signs.
