Almost exactly one year from the day a 19-year-old Quebec student was killed in a collision between a Purolator van and a BC Transit Bus on Highway 3A, charges have been laid against the driver of the Purolator van.

The incident occurred on June 30, 2022, near Tarrys, B.C. when the van sideswiped the eastbound bus, according to police.

There were 18 passengers on the bus including 16 students visiting from Quebec as part of an English immersion program at Selkirk College. One of the students was a 19-year-old woman who was sitting next to the window where the van hit the bus.

She was transported first to Trail’s Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, then to Kelowna General Hospital, but succumbed to her injuries.

RCMP Insp. Chad Badry said police are not releasing the name of the driver, who has been charged with driving without due care and attention under the Motor Vehicle Act.

He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Aug. 23 in Nelson Provincial Court.

The victim’s family in Quebec is aware that charges have been laid.
