The Grand Forks Secondary School (GFSS) boys curling team will be representing the Kootenay zone at the high school curling championships after travelling to Creston Jan. 27-28 to compete in the Kootenay zone playdowns.

They played against Prince Charles Secondary School (PCSS) of Creston. The first game was 7 p.m. on Saturday night.

The Wolves’ team is skipped by Devin Anderson in Grade 11 and the third is Elliott Starchuk, also in Grade 11. The second is Dawson Reid, Grade 10 and the lead position is shared by Ryan Dorgelo, Grade 10 and Isaac Horvath, Grade 8. The team is coached by Dave Bartlett.

The Wolves, Anderson, Starchuk, Reid and Dorgelo, having the hammer in the first end opened the scoring with two. This was followed up by a steal of four in the next end. Skip Devin Anderson made a tough draw to the pin in the third end forcing Creston to play a difficult takeout. PCSS executed two points. The fourth end once again saw Devin Anderson execute a beautiful draw to the pin to score a single. The score after four ends of play was 7 -2 for GFSS. The Wolves came out strong after the break and stole three to take a commanding seven-point lead. Prince Charles replied with a single point in the sixth and then conceded the game. The final score was 10 - 3.

The second game was at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The lineup for the Wolves this game was Anderson, Starchuk, Reid and Horvath. Once again, the Wolves opened the scoring with two points. PCSS struggled to get things going in the third end and the Wolves, who were curling well stole another five points. In the fourth end, Anderson again made a difficult draw to lie one behind several guards.

This stone remained, and the Wolves stole another point going into the break. The score after four ends of play was 9-0. The Wolves continued to play well and stole another single point in the fifth end. PCSS blanked the sixth end and finally got on the board with a single point in the seventh. The final score in the game was 11-1.

As a result of the two wins, the GFSS Wolves will now represent the Kootenay zone at the high school provincial curling championship in New Westminster the first week of March. This is the fourth year in a row that the Wolves have made it to the provincials.
