Volunteer Appreciation: Grand Forks Learning Garden

Grand Forks Learning Garden

The Public Learning Garden, located behind the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre, started in 2015 as a public space for people to come learn about the region’s horticulture and as a public space for those practicing Earth-centered spirituality, all of it built by volunteers.

Over the past year a core group of volunteers have been working steadily to make it a truly public and inviting space. From the medicine wheel garden the northeast section that’s been undergoing development since the beginning, to more recent additions of raised beds, an outhouse and tool shed. Over the years, it’s been a hub for gardeners looking to build resiliency, preserve history and develop food security, including seed exchanges, plant giveaways, grain milling demonstrations and numerous workshops over the years.

For the first time in its history, the garden is now open during weekdays for people to freely walk around.

While the core group has done a lot of work, they are always looking for more volunteers. Anyone interested can call Jim Raho at 250-442-0699, or Andrea Yalintis at 250-442-0390.
