1905

George Chapple has been appointed licence and police commissioner for the city of Grand Forks.

1910

The opening of Ole Johnson’s commodious hotel at Christina Lake was attended by many people.

1915

The first train from Grand Forks to Penticton on the CPR Kettle Valley Railway will be operated on Monday.

1920

The blacksmith shop of Wm. Liddicoat was burned to the ground about 3 a.m. yesterday.

1925

The Winnipeg Hotel is this week getting its second coat of paint with Messrs. Micheners as artists.

1930

Lola Hutton was crowned Queen of the May for Sunshine Valley.

1935

Dr. C.M. Kingston has been appointed a deputy coroner for the province.

1940

McLeon & Hodgson Ltd. are selling butter at three pounds for 80 cents; Burns & Co. Market has a special on picnic hams - 21 cents a pound.

1945

Hugh Sutherland and son Hugh Jr., were visitors to Colville for May 24.

1950

Retiring from the West Kootenay Power & Light Co., were Stack Dinsmore of Grand Forks and John Kready of Greenwood.

1955

Grand Forks has 499 telephones. This project cost $13,000 and contains 275 miles of wire.

1960

R. Nichols sold Alpine Inn to a group of Castlegar businessmen for $90,000.

1965

Fall Fair Queens for this year include Joanne Davidson, Barbara Goddard, Nicki Hirsch, Rose Chorney, Grace Pavan, Joanne Rella and Margaret Zebroff.

1970

Midway - The annual fish massacre has commenced again and several locals have been heard boasting of catching 60 or 100 trout in just a few hours at lakes up the Christian Valley area.

1975

City council turned down a request from the Grand Forks Stock Breeders Association to leave the slaughterhouse and cooler set up on the former de Haan property for another year.

1980

At its annual general meeting, Sunshine Valley Co-operative Society reported a very successful year with 2,326 members and work started on a $165,000 expansion to the store.

1985

Crowned Miss Grand Forks at Saturday’s pageant was Miss Gyro Cathy Zak.

1990

Grand Forks, this week, was thrown squarely into the middle of the most hotly-debated forest management issue in the province (private land logging) when neighbours of Victor Kotovitch protested his plans to log 20 hectares (50 acres) at the base of Eagle Mountain.

1995

Ceremonies were held this week to commemorate the 50th anniversary of VE-Day (Victory in Europe) on May 8, 1945, which brought the European phase of the Second World War to an end.

2000

The federal government issued its request for proposals on May 5 to establish a domestic source of research-grade marijuana that adheres to government standards and is affordable. This is the first-ever call by Health Canada for a contract to supply marijuana for medical tests. Brian Taylor and his company, the Cannabis Research Institute, will be among those sending in proposals for Health Canada to consider.

2005

Over 100 golfers participated in the Terry Hamagami Memorial Golf Tournament, making it the biggest turnout ever for the event. The event raised over $4,000 that will be put towards scholarships.

2010

Carving for a total pole that will eventually stand in the Christian Living Arts Centre was completed May 7. The tree that was used came from Son Ranch, and it underwent extensive preparation before and after it was taken down. The totem pole consists of four parts—each is significant to a specific aboriginal group.

2015

Grand Forks Secondary School students Sebastian Sullivan and Brandon Drexler earned second place in a regional Junior Dragons’ Den contest in Trail, for their business pitch for BCS Firewood Services – a firewood business the two developed with some mentorship. They said they would put the $1,000 in prize winnings towards equipment for their enterprise.

2020

Organizers announced that Canada Rock Fest 2020 has been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

This is just the latest Boundary event to fold for 2020 due to the pandemic, along with 2020 Founders’ Day, the annual Nisei Fishing Derby at Jewel Lake, the Grand Forks Car Show, the Grand Forks & District Fall Fair, the Grand Forks International baseball and Homecoming at Christina Lake.
