The Grand Forks Rotary Club held its 10th-annual Scotch Tasting Fundraiser at the Grand Forks Curling Club on Saturday night.

The event was a sell-out, with over 80 people in attendance. A selection of 10 high-end scotches was available for sampling, along with a good selection of beers and wines for those who have yet to acquire a taste for scotch.

Several local and Okanagan area notables attended, including the Mayor of Oliver Ron Hovanes and wife Tara, local MLA Linda Larson and husband Larry, and former Grand Forks Mayor Brian Taylor.

While final numbers are not yet in, Rotary estimates that the proceeds of the event will be around $1,500, the entire proceeds of which go to Rotary’s charitable projects in the Boundary.

Rotary Club president Alan Peterson announced Rotary’s major project for 2018, which is working with the Grand Forks BMX Club to fund the purchase and installation of a starting gate at the BMX track in City Park, and related improvements to the course.

“Contributing to improvements at the BMX course is an exciting project for our Rotary Club, it gives us the opportunity to help fund a community asset that is widely used by young people and families from all over the area. A starting gate enhances safety at the course, and will be well used by local and regional users alike,” Peterson said.

Peterson also announced that due to scheduling conflicts at the curling club venue, the annual Rotary Lobsterfest fundraiser will be moved from September to May, with the next Lobsterfest to be held May 2019.

“Not having Lobsterfest will make raising funds for the BMX park project a challenge, but we will be selling our Westjet lottery tickets and working very hard at other fundraising opportunities to make our goals,” Peterson said. “We always get tremendous community support whenever our club goes after a project, and I know that will continue this year.”
