The latest policing quarterly report for the Grand Forks Detachment shows overall reported crimes have increased, but have decreased in rural Grand Forks and Christina Lake, as well as overall calls for service.
The latest report released April 14 showed the total Criminal Code cases reported from Jan. 1 to March 30 for Grand Forks, Rural Grand Forks and Christina Lake were 95, an increase from 75 from the same reporting time last year. Looking at communities, Grand Forks had 68 calls, up from 47 for the same time last year. Christina Lake also had an overall increase, with 12 for this quarter, up from the eight for the 2024 first quarter. Rural Grand Forks had a decrease, with 15 overall reported crimes, down from 20 for the same time last year.
However, calls for service overall were down, 450 for this quarter compared to 465 for the same time last year.
Looking at overall statistics for Criminal Code incidents for this quarter compared to last year’s first quarter, there have been no reported homicides, attempted murders or robberies. Assaults were also down from eight, to three and sexual offences from three in 2024 to five. Auto theft remained the same between the two quarters two, as well as thefts from vehicles, with only one reported for this year and the same for the 2024 first quarter. There were eight breaks and enters this past quarter, up significantly from just two for the 2024 first quarter. The only category that decreased was drug investigations, two for this past quarter, down from four for the 2024 first quarter.
Looking at traffic and impaired driving offences, the number of vehicle collisions stayed the same for this past quarter and the 2024 first quarter at 21. Impaired driving that resulted in a motor vehicle accident also remained the same from the past quarter and the first quarter of 2024, at seven. There were no accidents resulting in death for this past quarter, compared to two for the first quarter of 2024. Impaired driving also took a slight dip to four reported for the past quarter, compared to five for the same time in 2024.
Community policing statistics have seen decreases or remained even. Negative contacts with youth were the same, with one incident for both the past quarter and the same time for 2024. Mental health-related calls decreased significantly, from 45 for the same time in 2024, to 31 for the past quarter. Files involving alcohol or drugs also dropped significantly with just three reported for the past quarter. Down from 46 for the same time in 2024.
