Avalanche control work wrapped up early on Wednesday, March 26, around 3 p.m., and Kootenay Pass has re-opened for travel, according to DriveBC.
Highway 3 (Crowsnest Highway) between Salmo and Creston closed in both directions numerous times over the last week, due to accumulation of freezing rain and snow causing higher avalanche risks.
An alternate route is available on the Kootenay Lake Ferry (via Highway 3A from Creston to Nelson). However, expect delays or short-notice sailing cancellations due to crewing issues. The estimated travel time taking the ferry is 2.5 hours.
Travellers are urged to drive cautiously and check drivebc.ca before hitting the road.
