A fire at the Black Bear mobile home park in Rossland tragically claimed a life last Wednesday.
Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue reported that firefighters from Rossland and Trail responded to the blaze at approximately 2:04 a.m. on Nov. 27.
Crews were met with intense flames and heavy smoke upon arrival and worked quickly to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby homes.
Despite their swift response and tireless efforts, the fire resulted in a fatality.
“This is a devastating incident for the community, and our thoughts are with the affected families,” said Glen Gallamore, deputy regional fire chief.
“Our firefighters worked tirelessly under challenging conditions to control the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby homes.”
Trail RCMP confirmed that a 49-year-old Rossland man, who lived in the residence, was unaccounted for and later found deceased.
“Officers conducted a thorough investigation and examination of the scene,” stated Sgt. Mike Wicentowich on Dec. 3.
“Foul play is not suspected at this time in the cause of the fire or the man’s death.”
The BC Coroners Service has taken over the matter, with Sgt. Wicentowich describing the fire as an accidental and tragic incident.
“Please take care to prevent fires in your home this holiday season,” he added.
Sixteen firefighters, including 12 from Rossland’s Station 371 and four from Trail’s Station 374, attended the scene at 891 Monte Vista Drive.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the RCMP, BC Coroners Service, and the local fire department. In the meantime, fire officials are urging residents to remain vigilant about fire safety and ensure smoke detectors are functional.
“This tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the severe risks fires pose, especially in mobile home settings,” said the fire department.
