Celebrate Canada with a concert in the park

grand forks canada day music concert the sadies

This Canada Day, some well-known bands will be coming to Grand Forks for a concert in City Park.

The Sadies, a well-known band from Toronto, will be headlining a show, put together by Zak Waterlow, from Waterlow Audio in Grand Forks. They have been putting together music for more than a decade and have worked with such bands as Neil Young and Neko Case.

The event is not part of the Canada Day committee planning but all proceeds are going to fund maintenance and repairs on James Donaldson Park.

“It’s still technically a non-profit event, though it is my company putting on the event,” Waterlow said.

There are three opening bands, which include the Ford Pier Headbanger Trio from Vancouver. Waterlow said that the musician is well-known around the coast.

“Ford Pier’s been around forever, he started out in the punk rock scene,” Waterlow said. “He writes his own music and has his own band.”

Another is Fish and Bird, who have played in Grand Forks twice before. They’re a five-piece folk band, with fiddles and banjos.

The first band playing will be Stone Crow, from Nelson and Waterlow compares their sound to Neil Young’s type of music, with a sort of artistic folk rock.

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. at the James Donaldson Park and ends at 11 p.m.

“We’ll probably have to get started pretty quick on the music, it’ll start at 7 p.m., but it might even start earlier than that because I’ve got the four groups I have to get through in the four hours,” he said.

Tickets are for sale at The Source in Grand Forks and Pack Rat Annie’s record store in Nelson. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the event.
