Woodworkers guild is keeping busy with projects

The Woodworkers Guild is hard at work on various projects around the city.

The guild just had their annual meeting and has a new president in Denis Hansen, says guildmember and Director Ron Mellett. The guild is currently rebuilding the Burns Wagon in Gyro Park.

“We’re trying to restore it to as original as possible and then when it’s done I guess it’ll go back to Gyro Park,” Mellett says.

He says the guild is also building some benches for the Living Arts Centre in Christina Lake.

“There always seems to be something coming up, so we’re never in a situation of having nothing to do,” he says.

Some of the recent guild projects were the bulletin board at the library and a scrum machine for the rugby club.

‘We’ve been keeping busy,” he says.

Mellett describes the guild as a bunch of people who are interested in woodworking.

“We get together and sometimes have little talks on various aspects of woodworking,” he says.

One future project the guild would like to do is work on an old CPR tool shed by the black train bridge.

“I think we’re either going to recreate or rebuild, I’m not sure which,” he says.

While the guild members are for the most part, amateurs, there are a few people who are professionals.

“One fellow is a trained carver – he does fantastic carving,” Mellett says. “Another fellow is a professional wood turner.”

Most of the others are hobbyists.

He says that most of the changes in the structure won’t change how the guild is run. “There haven’t been any conflicts.”
