Phoenix Foundation to spend extra funds on community organizations

With unexpected extra funding available, the Phoenix Foundation of the Boundary Communities is asking for community organizations to send in proposals for grants to the region this fall.

With unexpected extra funding available, the Phoenix Foundation of the Boundary Communities is asking for community organizations to send in proposals for grants to the region this fall.

Normally the foundation only calls for proposals in the spring of each year but this year, it found that it is looking for more applications.

“We reviewed our granting commitments and have identified extra funds that we decided should be distributed,” explained Linda Manzon, recently elected co-chair of the foundation.

“We’re really pleased that we can provide more money to help with the important work that our local organizations do across the region.”

In the spring of 2011 the foundation committed nearly $22,000 to assist 11 different organizations to do projects, including two of the largest grants the foundation has ever given.

Habitat for Humanity will receive $7,000 for the development of a complex for adults with disabilities and $5,000 was committed to the Grand Forks and Boundary Regional Agricultural Society to assist in its abattoir project.

“We didn’t expect to be able to give even more this year,” commented Darla Ashton, chair of the grants committee. “This is a really good opportunity for our local non-profit organizations to perhaps fill the funding gap on a project they have in mind.”

All proposals for this round will need to address one of the 11 key areas of concern identified in the foundation’s Vital Signs report completed in 2009/10.

The Village of Midway Partnership fund and the Greenwood Improvement Society have also decided to offer another round of grants. For information on their processes contact: Bob Hart (Midway) at 250-449-2262 or Fred Marshall (Greenwood) at 250-445-6496.
