Nominate a champion for literacy

The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy will be celebrating the second annual Champions of Literacy on Sept. 7.

The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy will be celebrating the second annual Champions of Literacy on Sept. 7.

You’re invited to nominate an individual, service group, organization or business in the Boundary who demonstrates a commitment to local literacy.

To give you an example of a Champion of Literacy, here’s the story of one of last year’s winners, Dave Watts:

Dave was nominated by the many students who read with him over the two years he volunteered for the One-to-One Reading program at Perley Elementary School.

On his scheduled days, Dave would navigate the route from the parking lot to the school with his cane (no easy task) to sit on the smallest of furniture in the oddest of locations to read with the children.

In two years, he never missed a single, scheduled day.

The children were devoted to Dave.

He was the invited guest at the Christmas concert rehearsals and he’d be seen cheering on the kids at the track meet.

It’s no wonder that the children lined up to hug him goodbye for the summer.

If you know an individual or an organization that has made a significant contribution to literacy in Grand Forks and Boundary area, pick up a form at: Grand Forks & District Public Library, Greenwood Public Library, Midway Public Library or the Grand Forks Gazette.

Or you can email your submission to Sheila Dobie sdobie@cbal.org. Deadline for

nominations is Aug. 31.
