Ministry of Agriculture holding information session for farmers

The Ministry of Agriculture and Lands will be in town to discuss a special program for farmers on Thursday.

The Community Futures office on Central Ave. will be the site for an information session for the ministry’s AgriStability program.

How the program works, how it can benefit a farming operation when there is a decline in income through factors beyond the farmers’ control and how to fill out forms will be amongst the topics discussed and attendees will also be made aware of deadlines.

“AgriStablity is a margin-based program and it protects farmers against declines in their net income due to market conditions,” explains Mohini Singh, AgriStability communications officer.

“It could be because of production loss or increased cost of production. Basically if they see a decline in their income or their margins, that’s when AgriStability could assist them, not will assist them.”

She says that the caveat is that people have to be enrolled in the program to be eligible and Thursday’s session will inform people about deadlines they will have to adhere to.

Singh says the ministry

representative at the session will be Bruce Hilder and he will be available to assist people and even provide one-on-one sessions if there are some not comfortable asking questions in front of the crowd.

The AgriStability session will run from 7 to 9 p.m.
