As we move fully into the growing season, things are flying along at Hanneke’s Place – the Kettle River Community Garden.

The garden is getting ready for the Grand Forks garden tour on July 6, and is preparing for some big projects this summer.

The garden held a successful fundraiser for a composting toilet at the garden, raising over $150 selling strawberry plants. The rest of the funds for the project are coming from garden membership fees and the Grand Forks and Boundary Regional Agricultural Society and two skilled volunteers from the community will lead the construction this June.

Gardeners have been busy planting their own beds, as well as a butterfly garden, a communal greens bed and a large potato patch.

We have a large brick herb spiral under construction to host a variety of culinary delights. One gardener is planning to grow out some heritage beans for the Boundary Seed Bank in one of the spare beds.

Another gardener has red plastic under his tomatoes and clear plastic above, and they are growing vigorously in the heat.

Come see a beautiful slideshow showcasing different B.C. community gardens, urban farms and tool libraries. The event will be presented by the Kettle River Community Garden at the Grand Forks and District Public Library June 13 at 6:30 p.m.
