Branch 59 of the Royal Canadian Legion, in Grand Forks, has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the B.C/Yukon Command’s Gaming Commission.

The Legion Week Gaming Grant will be used to celebrate Legion Week from June 24 to 30 in Grand Forks and will go towards celebrating the Royal Canadian Legion and to promote its efforts towards raising funds for local organizations and veterans.

“We are planning an open house at the Branch on June 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.,” explained Treasurer Georgina Ortis.

“It will include a membership drive, information about the legion, a chance for people to see our hall, an informal lunch of hot dogs, tofu dogs, chips, cake, ice cream, coffee, tea or beverages for our guests from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.”

The Grand Forks Pipes and Drums will also be in attendance.

In response to their application, B.C. and Yukon Command President Bob Brady noted that their outline for celebrations is impressive.

“It is commendable that you will use this opportunity to promote your Branch’s extensive charitable work in the community with all your business, civic and social agency partners. Well done!” he said in a letter.

“We will be using the grant to promote the legion in our community and to get some community involvement,” concluded Ortis. “It will be a fun and entertaining event for everyone.”
