Grand Forks Auxiliary to Boundary Hospital holds annual general meeting

A new executive for the Grand Forks Auxiliary to the Boundary Hospital was sworn in on Jan. 14.

The Grand Forks Auxiliary to the Boundary Hospital Association held its annual general meeting Jan. 14 at the Grand Forks hospital.

The boardroom was full of volunteers eager to greet their new executive and prepare for the coming year.

The executive was elected in November and was sworn in on Monday for a two-year term. Carole Richmond is the new president, taking over for Willy Triveri.

Richmond was the group’s secretary for at least four years before becoming president. Sharon Kenessey is the new vice-president and Lenora Balazs has stepped up to be the new secretary.

“I am looking forward to the new challenges,” said Richmond of her new position, adding that she can’t wait to see the thrift store continue to grow.

The Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store, which is run by the association, has had a profitable year.

It donated over $100,000 to the Boundary Hospital for numerous pieces of equipment. Each year the association is given a wish list by the hospital and it tries to buy as many items as possible from the list.

While most of the money is given for hospital equipment, the association also uses its funds to help the community.

It gave $4,000 in scholarship money to help local students with their post secondary education.

Half of it went to a Grand Forks Secondary School student and the rest was awarded to a Boundary Central Secondary School student in Midway.

Over $3,000 was donated to Hardy View Lodge and Boundary Lodge for Christmas gifts.

“It’s been a stellar year for sure,” said Richmond.

All of this is accomplished through the work of over 100 volunteers that run the thrift store.

The volunteers strive to keep everything running smoothly and put forth new ideas to streamline the system.

At the meeting, they discussed a new method of colour-coding their boxes so they can easily find seasonal items.
