The Christina Lake Stewardship Society (CLSS) held its 13th annual Lake Clean Up Day on May 25.  There was a great turnout with approximately 57 people in all.

Throughout the morning, and the days leading up, volunteer crews made their way around roadways and parks to clean up the garbage that others have carelessly left behind.

Following this clean sweep, the volunteers met back at the nature park kiosk for refreshments, and prizes from the draw were awarded.

This year, crews managed to haul over 50 bags of garbage and recycling.

A surprising component of the take was cigarette butts that people carelessly threw out their car windows.

This can be a major hazard in this area due to dry conditions, and one cigarette butt could cause a large forest fire, so proper disposal of these fire starters is necessary.

Although cleaning up garbage is not the most glamorous job, all of the volunteers came out with smiles on their faces and did a great job. It is amazing that so many people do not pack out what they pack in, and do not take responsibility for their own garbage.

By cleaning up the streets and parks, the society is hoping that it can encourage other people to do the same and do their part to respect our environment.
