Joan Bartlett's 'Spirit Cat' will be included at the 2012 Calgary Stampede Western Art Auction.

Christina Lake artist Joan Bartlett has had one of her bronzes selected from over 300 art submissions, for inclusion in the 2012 Calgary Stampede Western Art Auction.

Joan’s sculpture, entitled “Spirit Cat”, was one of only six bronzes chosen for the auction this year.

Joan has recently switched from oil painting to sculpture, so she was delighted to have one of her pieces selected for the Stampede’s auction.

She has discovered that clay is the artistic medium she has been searching for.

“I love the 3-D aspect of it,” she explains.

Constantly striving for perfection and detail, she uses her lifetime experiences in ranching and rodeo for inspiration.  “I like my pieces to tell a story and try to portray both the action and heart of the animals and people,” she says.

Cowboys, horses, wildlife and anything western dominate her subject matter.  Joan has exhibited at the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton, Alta., the Empire 100 Western Art Show in Tucson, Ariz., the Tubac Festival of the Arts in Tubac, Ariz., as well as shows in Ritzville, Wash. and Missoula, Mont.

She is represented by the Deadwood Junction Gallery in Greenwood.

The Calgary Stampede Centennial runs from July 6 to 15 and the auction will be held during the evening of Thursday, July 12.
