CHECK IT OUT! Grand Forks and District Public Library discusses how to avoid scams

The Grand Forks and District Public Library will be hosting free computer classes, as well as an event to talk about avoiding scams.

Hi Grand Folks!

Once again, I need your help. This time, it’s a much more serious issue. I have $15 million and I want you to assist me in distributing the money to charity organizations. I agree to reward you with part of the money for your assistance, kindness and participation in this project, 35 per cent for you, 55 per cent for me, 10 per cent for charity. This might come to you as a surprise and please ignore the temptation to ignore it as unserious. All one needs from you is to wire the sum of $10,000 into my account in order to liberate the $15 million.

If the above deal sounds suspicious to you, you might have already read Will Ferguson’s Giller-prize winning thriller 419. If it sounds like a good deal, you might want to come by the library on Friday, Nov. 16 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sally Caisley, from the Council of Senior Citizen’s Organizations of BC (COSCO), will be leading a discussion on “Frauds and Scams” as part of our Learn @ Lunch series.

Other exciting things that are going on around here:

• Fabulous Fridays are back! Come by on this Friday (Nov. 9) from 1 to 3 p.m. to make crafts, eat snacks, and to play board games or Xbox 360 Kinect. All ages welcome and no registration required.

• On Saturday, Nov. 17, we will be hosting an RDKB drop-in for community members to talk about issues in the Kettle River watershed.  Come by anytime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to have your concerns heard. Refreshments will be provided!

• From Nov. 15 to 30, you are welcome to come by the library and donate canned goods in exchange for having your overdue fines eliminated.

Also, we will be offering a series of free, basic computer workshops at the library, in partnership with the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL). Call to register as space is limited.

• Nov. 13 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., “Introduction to Using the Internet”

• Nov. 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., “Getting to Know Your Computer”

• Nov. 14 from 2 to 5 p.m., “Working with Photos”

• Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., “Using Facebook”

• Nov. 15 from 2 to 4 p.m., “Email for Beginners”

And lastly, you’ve probably been hearing about the new movie, Cloud Atlas. It was, as usual, a book before it was a movie, and a fantastic one at that, so come by to check it out. The author’s name is David Mitchell, and he’s a UK writer who has written a number of other books, all of which live here at the library.

Happy Reading!
