A wonderful evening of celebration was held at the Grand Forks Art Gallery (Gallery 2) on Sept. 7, when the Champions for Literacy in the Boundary were honoured.

“Every year we put out a call to the community to nominate people and organizations that have made a difference with literacy in our community,” explained Sheila Dobie, community literacy co-ordinator with Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL).

“Nominees can be a parent, volunteer, or caregiver dedicated to passing on the love of reading, or writing or even computers – any of the wide range of tools we use to communicate and move through the world. Organizations nominated are devoted to the task of making information and learning a life long path. The awards event is when we bring all the nominees together and honour them with a lovely evening of desserts and celebration.”

This years Champions for Literacy are:

-Linda Scott, Bridesville/Rock Creek; Julie Damore and James Graham from Midway;

-Sue Fielding from Greenwood;

-Sandy Shilling, Clint Faulkner, Brenda Boyd, Grand Forks; William Caley, Wanda Hecht, Dylan Zorn, Catriona Popoff, Patricia Bevilacqua, Barry Dick, Leslie Davidson and Lizanne Eastwood all from Grand Forks;

-The Essential Skills Team from the Trail Skills Centre;

-The Grand Forks Gazette

-Jason Zwall, Yvonne Kopan and Sunshine Valley Community Services

-Heather Buzzell of the Grand Forks Library and library volunteers Jaclyn Salter and Michele Dean from Grand Forks and Deborah Baker from Greenwood/Midway;
