As I’m sitting at my desk Tuesday morning, writing this column, I’m thinking ahead to tonight, when I am planning on going to see the Spotlight Films showing of Lady Bird at the Gem Theatre later this evening.

The thought of kicking back with some popcorn is getting me through the long day, following the even longer day before (I covered council meetings, enough said) and the movie looks great to boot.

I recently went a bit out of my way to watch The Post, the new movie with Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep that chronicles the Washington Post’s grappling with the Pentagon Papers. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I love movies about journalism, and this one was a disappointment.

One of my favourite movies to date is Spotlight, the tale of the Boston Globe reporters uncovering the Catholic Church abuse scandal. It’s a grim movie about an abhorrent subject, but it is gripping and the acting is impeccable. It remains one of the only movies I’ll watch over and over again.

I’ll also watch the Harry Potter saga continuously. I grew up having those books read to me, and later, dragging my mom to the bookstore at midnight on release day to pick up a copy. It is one of the only movie franchises based on a book that I don’t feel was an utter disappointment.

Now, for an embarrassing confession: there are some classic movies I have never seen and never intend to. I have never seen the Star Wars movies, and never seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I know I sit back without comment whenever these movies invariably come up in conversation, but somehow I’ve just never motivated myself to watch them. Instead, I binge-watch Friends for the third time, put on the last two Harry Potter movies again, or (lately) catch up on the eight or so seasons of Grey’s Anatomy that have been on the air since the show was popular when I was in Grade 10. Oops.

What classic movies will you admit to never having watched, and what are some of your favourites? I’ll be sure to let you know how I liked Lady Bird next week.
