SD51 votes to join Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce

School District 51 has decided to join the regional chamber of commerce after discussing the possibility at a meeting.

School District 51 (SD51) has decided to join the Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce (BCRCC) after discussing the possibility at a meeting.

Along with deliberations on using social media, SD51 felt the BCRCC would enable further avenues of conversations with the public.

Trustee Vicki Gee believes that joining the board would benefit the school board.

“I’ve had conversations with a couple of people involved in promoting it in the area,” stated Gee.

“I asked why would a community club be a part of something like this and found some of the projects that they’re undertaking are common websites and to keep track of events in the community.”

BCRCC Executive Director Sarah Winton noted by joining the chamber, it helps to support the community.

“It’s a good way for the school district to keep everyone in the loop and to reach out to more individuals, businesses and families than they may otherwise be able to through their own website or newspaper,” said Winton.

“We’re targeting a different kind of audience and we can relay their information.”

SD51 Board Chair Teresa Rezansoff also felt it was a good idea to join.

“I don’t see any worry about us buying into anything particular,” Rezansoff said.

“It’s a membership, not a voting right, so that we have access and permission to be a part of something that they are putting together.”

Winton pointed out the BCRCC is unable to relay messages to the rest of the community unless the organization or business is a member.

“We would have a link to the school district website,” explained Winton.

“If the (school board) has any information that they felt was relevant or important for the community, specifically the business community, to be aware of, we would post that in our newsletter or on the website.”

The BCRCC aims to build a strong business network that will promote the Boundary Country, and encourages business and community development.

To join the BCRCC, it is an annual fee of $50.
