A local coffee shop has taken home eight awards for Kootenay Business Magazine’s Best Places to Eat and Drink.

Jogas Espresso Café received platinum awards for business lunch place, coffee place, ice cream/dessert place, overall favourite restaurant, gold for best breakfast place, brunch place and family restaurant and a silver award for its bakery in the magazine’s awards, which are voted on by readers.

Donna and Roger Soviskov, proprietors of the café, were pleased and surprised, not only to hear that their business has taken the awards but that they had taken awards in so many categories.

“They actually called us and said, ‘I had to make the phone call because in the 14 years that we’ve run this contest, we’ve never had a business take eight categories.’ It’s pretty cool,” Roger Soviskov said.

But both Roger and Donna don’t want to take full credit for the accolades.

“Our staff is huge,” explained Donna.

“They’re behind us 100 per cent and they’re awesome.”

“We’re only as good as our staff,” Roger said.

“We give them a lot of credit.”

While Jogas Espresso Café does have a set menu, the Soviskovs said they are constantly looking to add and to innovate.

Donna Soviskov explained that there are daily lunch specials and she is constantly trying to add things.

“I try to be different and unique; I’m on the Internet searching for hours for recipes,” she said.
