Letter: Sustainable for who?

Surely not sustainable for the forest as ecosystem, or the animals and flora therein, writes Angelica Herllihy.

I would like to know about sustainable forestry.

Sustainable for who or what? Sustainable for the shareholders, or the mill itself? Sustainable for the millworkers? Sustainable for the men working out there?

Surely not sustainable for the forest as ecosystem, or the animals and flora therein. For the latter it is more like a scalping and flattening of everything alive.

So perhaps we need to choose our words more carefully when we proudly announce our actions as “sustainable.” Sustainable in the dictionary: “Involving methods that do not completely use up or destroy natural resources.”
