William was born in Wroxton, Saskatchewan on April 4, 1923, the eighth of nine children, to Thomas and Mary (nee Romaniuk) Starchuk. The family moved to Vancouver, B.C. in 1924, then to Grand Forks in 1927. He graduated from high school in 1941 and promptly joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a leading aircraftman from 1942 – 1945. He married a local girl, Mary Zak, on February 7, 1948. They were married for 67 years. In his early years he worked as an orchardist and held other odd jobs until he settled in the Department of Highways in 1956. He remained there for 23 years and retired in 1980. William is survived by his wife, Mary, 7 children – Tom (Lorna), Theresa (Rob) Hryciw, Bernadette (John) Soong, Joe (Denise), William (Jean), Greg (Leigh), and Bernard (Lorraine), 20 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents (Thomas and Mary), 5 brothers – James, John, Mike, Tommy and David and 3 sisters – Doris, Lillian and Anne and grandson Matthew Starchuk. William loved the great outdoors, especially hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren. He died peacefully on March 10, 2015 surrounded by his family. He will be greatly missed. We love you Dad! A Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Sacred Heart Church in Grand Forks, BC, with Celebrant Father Ron Dechant, Con Celebrant Father Marcel Coté and Bishop Cooney, with burial following at the Evergreen Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Baker Family of Grand Forks Funeral Home, gffh@shaw.ca.
