PETER Voiken

Peter Voiken was born on October 3, 1929, in Verigin, Sask. He was the eldest of five children. He attended school in Spruce Grove, SK. He and his family relocated to Brandon, Man., where he worked at Camp Shiloh as a labourer. The family eventually relocated to Grand Forks, B.C., for work opportunities. It was there that he met Mary Lapshinoff. They were married soon afterward on December 20, 1952. Peter and Mary were blessed with five children: Ron, Larry, Michael, Karen and Linda. Peter worked at various jobs throughout the years. He was a chokerman and a faller for a logging company, employed by the Phoenix mine, and finally the Department of Highways. He enjoyed sports and played softball with the local Co-op team, which placed second in a provincial tournament. He was also involved with the Babe Ruth Baseball League when his sons were young. Peter took an early retirement from work in 1988 due to health reasons.He spent his retirement years helping out in the garden, and around the house. He also devoted a lot of his time to his grandchildren, and was readily available to help out with transporting them to and from school. He enjoyed cruising the neighbourhood on his bicycle, watching sports on TV, especially hockey, and he was very politically minded and loved to converse about the going-ons in the province and country.In 2002, Peter required heart surgery. At that time, it was also discovered that he had acquired Parkinson?s disease. In 2004, it was required that Peter have a partial leg amputation, due to Diabetes. Since that time, his health continued to decline. After several years of being cared for at home by his loving and devoted wife, Mary, Peter was admitted to Hardy View Lodge in 2007. Peter passed away peacefully on June 17, 2010, at the age of 80, due to symptoms of Parkinson?s disease.He was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Mike Voiken; his sisters: Ann and Laura Voiken, and Lena Lazeroff, and an infant granddaughter at birth, Ciarra Voiken. He is survived by his wife, Mary; sons: Ron, Larry (of Vancouver, B.C.) and Michael Voiken; daughters: Karen (Gary) Doucette and Linda Voiken; grandchildren: Jennifer (of Kelowna, B.C.), Madison, Nadia, Michelle, Rayna, Asia, Dara, Denelle, Dane, Alexa and Cameron. He is also survived by his sister, Dora Montagne of Kamloops, B.C., and by numerous nieces and nephews. Peter had a good sense of humour and loved to hear and tell a good joke. He was a caring and extremely generous father and grandfather. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. Peter will be sorely missed by all of his family members. May he rest in peace.The funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 22, 2010. Burial followed at the USCC cemetery. The Baker family of Grand Forks Funeral Home had care of arrangements.
