Peter N. Hlookoff

August 23, 1942 - August 10, 2016


Peter N. Hlookoff of Grand Forks, passed away on August 10, 2016, at the age of 73. He was born in Appledale, B.C., to parents Nick and Tania Hlookoff, on August 23, 1942, the youngest of three children.

When Peter was six years old, the Hlookoff family moved to Vancouver, where he attended school. He graduated from high school in 1959, then moved on to attend UBC, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. In his younger years he travelled to Europe working on the ship to pay for his passage. Throughout his lifetime he enjoyed travelling to Mexico, Cuba, and the United States.

Peter was one of the original editors who started the Georgia Straight. Writing was his passion. He had fluent knowledge in the Russian and Spanish languages. Peter was an avid reader and during his lifetime read many books. Peter appreciated nature, enjoying several outdoor activities – skiing, hiking, and mushroom picking.

He worked as a longshoreman in Vancouver until retirement, at which time he moved to Grand Forks, where he resided until his passing. Peter had a deep affection for his cat “Twilight”, his buddy in his later years.

Peter is survived by sisters, Polly Hlookoff of Vancouver and Anne (Phil) Sookachoff of Castlegar; niece, Wendy (Dean) Ritz and their family – Jessica & Brody; and grandnephew, Nick and grandniece, Natasha Sookachoff. Peter was predeceased by his father Nick in 1992; mother Tania in 2007; nephew Cal Sookachoff in 2014.

There will be no funeral service; cremation has taken place. May he rest in peace. We would like to thank Everett and the staff at the Grand Forks Funeral Home for their assistance.
