“Papa John” passed away September 27, 2010, at Penticton, B.C., in Moog & Friends Hospice facility.
Born at Friesland, Holland, he was the second son of a family of four (three brothers, one sister). He was stationed in Indonesia during World War ll, and immigrated to Canada in 1951.
John’s passion was gardening. Together, with his wife Velma and their two children Stan and Sandy, the family spent 15 years farming at Grand Forks where they operated Oasis Farm. In 1988 John’s wife passed away at the age of 51 after a courageous battle with cancer. John cared for her during her lengthy illness, a testament to his love and devotion to her.
During the past five years he resided in Keremeos, B.C. He was able to live independently at his home during most of his illness because of the care and generosity of his neighbours, Sandi and Barry Ravenhill. While he enjoyed spending most of his time alone, John formed many friendships over the years. He was especially close to his circle of friends from Grand Forks and his cousin Sieberen.
John’s legacy was the life lessons he taught his children: be passionate about all you do, stand proud always, and embrace humbling experiences with strength and dignity.
John was predeceased by his parents, and his older brother Sam. He leaves behind his brother Udian, sister Leeza, cousin Sieberen, and his children Stan (Joni) and Sandy (George).
At his request there will be no service. His ashes will be buried alongside his wife at Evergreen Cemetery in Grand Forks. Arrangements in care of Providence Funeral Home of Penticton, B. C.
