April 1, 2010

Survived by his children Chris (Art), Gary (Debbie), Robert, Jeff (Marilyn), Mary Clare and grandchildren Joshua, Sarah, Marie, John, Jesse, Danielle, Zak, Michela and Elijah; his brother Carl (Margaret), sister Mary (William) and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Mary (Siska) and Joseph Zak, and his granddaughter, Rebecca.Dad was born in Habovka, Czechoslovakia, and came to Canada in 1937, along with his mother and siblings to join their father in Grand Forks. His father Joseph had left the old country a decade earlier to establish a new beginning for his family. Dad often talked about this trip as a great adventure and taught all of us to make the best of life's circumstances, that no matter what the challenge, life was full of opportunity.Dad attended just one year of high school then helped on the family farm before pursuing a career with CP Rail, where he became an Engineer. He married Mary Polacik (Hood) and they raised our family in North Vancouver until 1968 when we moved to Nelson. It was a place he had enjoyed as a young railroader and he wanted to be closer to family.Dad always said you could never make money just working for someone else. So he also pursued his interests in real estate and business, which he carried on throughout his life. He loved the outdoors and taught his children to ski, swim, fish, bike ride and play tennis. Dad also loved collecting antiques, bartering in second hand stores, prospecting for minerals, paddling his canoe, and sitting around a fire telling stories. An avid reader and intellectual, he encouraged his children in their educational and professional endeavours. He was proud of his grandchildren and applauded their many skills and talents.Near and dear to his heart of late was Luba, his special companion. They spent many happy days together at Talarico Place. Our sincere thanks to Dr. Merritt, the staff of Talarico Place, other caregivers, the Knights of Columbus and friends who made it such a happy home for him. Thanks also for the compassionate care from Trail Hospital staff surgical unit in his final days. Arrangements are entrusted to Bill Strilaeff of Castlegar Funeral Chapel.Prayers will be held at St. Rita's Parish on Friday, April 23, 2010 at 7 p.m., with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 24, 2010.
