Residents will continue to have recycling service after the district’s current contract expires on June 30 thanks to a new agreement reached, with a few changes on the way.

As of July 1, the non-profit Recycle BC (formerly known at Multi-Material BC) will be managing the curbside service for all of the RDKB, including Grand Forks. This is a shift from the previous contract, which had the RDKB administering the service through a contractor. Recycle BC will be contracting Alpine Disposal and Recycling Ltd. to provide collection.

According to a press release distributed this week, residents will notice some changes to the program, including the addition of two new blue bins (to be distributed in June). Residents will be required to sort paper from containers using the blue boxes and use their provided blue bins instead of plastic bags beginning collection on July 3.

“New recycling guides and schedules will be delivered to residents with their new blue boxes, which will include detailed sorting instructions,” said the press release.

“’We look forward to serving the people of Kootenay Boundary, and we’re committed to a smooth transition of service,’ said Allen Langdon, Managing Director of Recycle BC. ‘Residents can expect the same high-level of service they receive today, and can continue to recycle the same materials, just in a different way. We’d like to thank residents in advance for separating their paper and containers, which will help us keep more materials out of landfill.’”

The program will accept the same materials as before, and the same plastic bags, foam packing and glass will still require drop off at a Recycle BC depot (formerly the Multi-Material BC depot). Residents can find a complete list at recyclebc.ca

“Residents will be notified of any changes to collection schedules, pick-up times and the customer service phone number through the new recycling guides, which will be delivered with the blue boxes in June, and the service area web page at RecycleBC.ca/Boundary. The web page will also include frequently asked questions and answers. Residents can also check their schedule, set up service reminders, search materials and find their nearest depot using the Recycle BC mobile app, which can be downloaded at RecycleBC.ca, Google Play or the App Store,” said the press release.

According to the press release, Recycle BC directly services the RDKB in the Trail and Rossland areas, as well as the Regional Districts of Central Kootenay and North Okanagan.

Residents can continue to find green bin and garbage service information on the RDKB website.
